A monumental project under way is the reconstruction of the Frauenkirche (Church of Our Lady), which will take many years to complete. Originally the church was to be left in ruins as a sad testimonial to the Allied bombing of 1945, but now the plan has changed and the building that was once considered the most beautiful Protestant church in Europe is rising slowly from the ashes.
