The well-known Rheinsberg Castle was originally a medieval moated castle. From 1734, it was converted for Crown Prince Friedrich (the future Frederick the Great). In the course of the following decades, the castle park, the cavalier’s house and the castle theatre were created. Today, the musical academy is housed here, whose concerts are known far beyond the national borders. Because Rheinsberg constitutes a wonderful backdrop for classical concerts, the Festival for Classical Music takes place here at Easter, as well as the Rheinsberg Musical Days at Whitsuntide and, from June to August, the Rheinsberg Chamber Opera. In the castle, there is also a memorial for Kurt Tucholsky, which is devoted to the life and work of the author who is one of the most significant social critics of the Weimar Republic. His “Picture Book for Lovers” proverbially stands for a visit to Rheinsberg. Walking from the castle under age-old chestnut trees, you can reach the ships’ mooring, which is the starting point for journeys through the Rheinsberg lake landscape. You should also explore Rheinsberg town centre with its remarkable St. Laurentius Parish Church in the early Gothic style or its many houses with one or two rooms dating back to the middle of the 18th century, which even today characterise entire streets of houses. The beautiful Rheinsberg-Fürstenberg Lake District is located in the proximity of Rheinsberg. Canoe trips, bathing from the beach, hiking, rides by bicycle or horse riding, all of these activities are a delight in this beautiful landscape of forests and lakes.
