Vers Pont du Gard, France

Just north of Nîmes is the spectacular Pont du Gard, an aqueduct that impressively bridges the River Gard. Still intact, three tiers of stone arches tower more than 36 meters across the valley. Built by Roman engineers about 20 B.C. as part of a 50-kilometer-long system bringing water from Uzès to Nîmes, the aqueduct remains one of the world’s marvels. Park in the car park amid the tourist stalls and food stands and walk a pedestrian road to the span of river that thankfully lies uncluttered, dominated only by the impact and shadow of the towering structure

The Pont du gard is the spectacular vestige of a masterly Roman aqueduct that wound through the hills of the Uzège to bring water to Nîmes. Do not miss nearby Uzès, a superb medieval town and the first duchy of France. A must see is the very alive Saturday market.

The Pont du Gard is undoubtedly the most spectacular structure of the whole aqueduct and is Unesco World heritage listed. The Roman erected a bridge of an exceptional scale : 275 m Long,48m high, composed of three levels of arcades. An interactive museum tracing the history of the Pont du Gard, offers a film shown on a giant screen. From there, do not miss the beautiful city of Uzés
