In 1801 Napoleon permitted the beginning of the Rue de Rivoli which he named after his victory at the Battle of Rivoli where he defeated the Austrians. Over the years the road has been lengthened and changed somewhat until, now , it has become one of the most famous and fashionable streets in Paris.
