FONTAINEBLEAU, as with many of our sightseeing venues in the Ile de France, was a popular retreat and residence for the French kings. The medieval hunting lodge was especially popular, standing at the heart of its immense forest, which was considered the royal hunting ground. Louis I is credited with most of its improvements. Wanting to convert the small existing medieval castle into a palace to rival the decadence of Rome, the work he commissioned draws from both Renaissance and French artistic traditions—the result most definitely a magnificent Italianate palace. Of special interest, the Gallery of François I, with its frescoes framed in stucco by Rosso, is the first great decorated gallery built in France.
Fontainebleau was a hunting lodge for all French kings through history. Its beautifully decorated rooms, and lovely gardens make the visit a most impressive one. Fontainebleau forest with its famous boulders for rock climbing is widely known.
