A Karen Brown Recommendation
Les Eyzies de Tayac, Aquitaine, France |
| Recenter Map To This Location |
Les Eyzies de Tayac, the site where the skull of the Cro Magnon man was found is considered the prehistoric capital of the world. In the area are many prehistoric caves, many of which have been closed to the public in order to protect and preserve them. There are however, two caves just on the edge of town that are still open to visitors. Just on the edge of town is the Font de Gaume cave and a short short distance from Font de Guam is Les Combarelles. Les Combarelles is a cave discovered in 1901. The entrance is about a 100-meter (level) walk from the car park. The cave is a winding passage with engravings of mammoth, ibex, bears, reindeer, bison, and horses—and man in the last 70 meters. Entrance is limited to 140 visitors per day and the cave is closed every Wednesday. Advance booking and hours of opening are identical to Font de Gaume.
