This is one of the highest mountain passes in England (1,682 feet), rising steeply from Wensleydale, crossing dramatic high moorlands, and depositing you in narrower, wilder Swaledale. The road gets its name “Buttertubs” from the deep, limestone pits some distance from the road near the summit.
