General Vallejo, the military commander and director of colonization of the Northern Frontier (until the Bear Flag Revolution established California as a free and independent republic), lived at “Lachryma Montis” with his wife and their 12 children. This Gothic-Victorian home was built on the east coast, shipped around the horn then assembled here in Sonoma. The crystal chandeliers, lace curtains, rosewood grand piano and many other furnishings were imported from Europe. Vallejo’s home once included a large barn and several houses for the working staff, several pavilions and various outbuildings. Grape vines and fruit trees were planted. The quarter-mile long driveway entrance was lined with cottonwood trees and Castilian roses.

The house is well signposted on the outskirts of town on Spain Street.
