The problem facing early developers of Golden Gate Park was how to get water to what was a barren landscape. Buying water was expensive so the Dutch Windmill was built in 1902 to pump water from beneath the sand dunes into the park. Thousands of trees and shrubs were planted and the project was immensely successful. By 1913 electricity was all the rage and electric pumps replaced the windmill which was left to decay. Restoration was completed in 1981.
