The Ephrata Cloister, 632 W. Main Street in Ephrata (northeast of Lancaster on Route 222) provides guided tours of several of the religious commune’s original Germanic-style buildings. This National Historic Landmark was the site of the ultimately failed religous community founded by Conrad Beissel in 1732 loosely based on the German Baptist Brethren and incorporating Beissel's preference for celibacy.
