Four miles north of Newport, the Interpretive Center at Yaquina Head Outstanding Natural Area (follow the signage off Hwy 101) offers first-rate exhibits and videos to introduce you to this unique spot: a 100-acre column of ancient lava stretching 1 mile out into the ocean. (Open daily, year round; 541-574-3100.) Just south of the center, at the tip of the Quarry Cove Inter-tidal headlands, stands Yaquina Lighthouse (open daily from June 15th to September 15th for guided morning tours, weather permitting), built in 1873 and billed as the tallest lighthouse on the Oregon coast at 93 feet.
