A detour onto Beacon Hill, an area where early merchants built homes and where the Capitol Building(State House) is located, is well worth the time. Prior to the revolution, the Beacon Hill area was predominately pasture land with the exception of John Hancock's estate. Most of the existing homes were built in the 19th century.
