Set at the head of Loch Shiel, the monument was built in 1815 to commemorate the more then 1,000 Jacobites clansmen, many of whom fought and fell during the 1745 uprising. Prince Charles Edward Stuart (Bonnie Prince Charlie) raised his standard on the 19th August 1745 marking the start of his campaign to restore the exiled Stuarts to the throne.A tall castellated tower marks the place where they are said to have hoisted the Stuart standard. You climb the tower stairs to the statue of a Highlander overlooking the icy waters of the mountian-ringed loch. At the adjacent visitors' center the prince's exploits are protrayed.
