Another excursion from Lucerne is to the town of Einsiedeln to see the home of the famous Black Madonna. The Monastery of Einsiedeln was founded by Meinrad, a Benedictine monk, who built a small chapel for the Black Madonna (a statue of the Virgin Mary), which had been given to him by Zürich priests. Meinrad was later murdered by some men who mistakenly thought he had hidden treasures. Later, the Monastery of Einsiedeln was built over Meinrad’s grave and another chapel was erected to house the Black Madonna. This site has become a pilgrimage, not only for Catholics, but also for tourists who are attracted to the Einsiedeln Abbey, an excellent example of Baroque architecture.
