Beynac is probably one of the most picturesque villages in the Dordogne River Valley. It is a small village huddled beneath a cliff crowned by a 12th-century fortress before a broad sweep of the Dordogne. The castle, while its furnishings are sparse, is well worth visiting for the spectacular views. (Open all year.) On the water’s edge is Hôtel Bonnet, recommended not for its accommodation, but as a scenic and excellent choice for lunch under vine-covered trellises.
