After a number of false starts using different designs, this building was completed under Napoleon's direction in the early 19th century. On this site, originally intended to house a church, Napoleon built a 'Temple to the Glory of the Great Army'. King Louis XVIII later decided the building should be used as a church and was finally consecrated as the Eglise de la Madeleine (Church of Mary Magdelene) in 1842.
