Karen's Review Of This Property:
No railroad noise for the lord of the manor in this neighborhood—he lobbied for the Petworth train station to be built beyond earshot, almost 2 miles from town. The last train ran in 1966 and the gingerbread-style Victorian station has been cleverly converted to a home. The former waiting room is now a spacious sitting room, with sofas gathered round the fire and individual pine tables set for breakfast on cool days. Warmer days find guests breakfasting outside on the platform beside the sweep of lawn that was once the train tracks. Two bedrooms occupy one side of the building—downstairs, a room with a brass-and-iron queen-sized bed and spacious modern full bathroom and upstairs, an equally romantic room set beneath a soaring beamed ceiling with high skylights instead of windows. Six more are found in three Edwardian Pullman cars (as used on the Orient Express) which have been restored to reflect an era of bygone elegance. No dinner is served so guests often pop next door to The Badger Inn. Petworth is an ideal base for exploring stately homes (Petworth, Goodwood, Uppark), viewing gorgeous gardens (Westdean, Nymans), and visiting the Weald and Downland Museum.
