Karen's Review Of This Property:
This pretty village of flint-walled, tile-roofed cottages is no longer “next the sea” but separated from it by a vast saltwater marsh formed as the sea retreated. The massive structure of Cley windmill is the villages most photographed building. The circular sitting room has large chintz chairs drawn round a stone fireplace whose mantel is a sturdy beam, a perfect place to enjoy a drink in the evening by the fire. Stacked above the sitting room are two large circular bedrooms with en suite bathrooms: the Wheat Chamber is where the grain was stored and the Stone Room is where the massive grinding stones crushed the flour. The very top of the tower is accessed by a steep ladder, views over the windmill sails to the distant sea are magnificent. I especially enjoyed my stay in the River Room with its private entrance and lovely view out over the reed beds. The old boathouse and stables in the yard are stylish little retreats. Dinner is available with advance reservations. It’s a short walk to the village shops. Surrounded by reed beds and tranquility the windmill overlooks the salt marshes and Cley bird sanctuary with Blakeney harbor in the distance. Birdwatching, sailing, cycling, and walking are popular pastimes in the area. There are a great many stately homes to explore such as Sandringham House, the Royal Family’s country residence, Fellbrigg Hall, Holkham, and Blickling Hall.
