Karen's Review Of This Property:
The Grandhotel Giessbach, dating from 1874, is a picturesque Victorian-style, grand hotel—a sprawling, five-story building with towers, turrets, balconies, and flower boxes. Nestled high in a wooded forest, the setting is sublime. One side looks down to beautiful Lake Brienze and the other side has a spectacular view of the Giessbach waterfalls, right by the hotel. This irreplaceable jewel was to be demolished by land developers who planned to build a new jumbo, concrete hotel—ending forever an era. Thankfully, Franz Weber, miraculously saved the day by forming a foundation to raise money to bring the Grandhotel Giessbach back to its former splendor. The interior is stunning with gorgeous antique furniture throughout. Each of the guestrooms is individually decorated with fine furnishings. There is a splendid gourmet restaurant called Chez Florent, where the food is incredible, and the more casual Orangerie restaurant. When the weather is warm, guests dine outside on the terrace with views in every direction. You can drive up a winding narrow lane to the hotel, but it is more fun is to leave your car at the Interlaken-Ost parking lot and take the boat to Griessbach pier where a cute little red funicular (Giesserbachbahn) is waiting to chug 1000 meters up the steep mountain and deliver you to the hotel.
