Karen's Review Of This Property:
The ruins at Chichén Itzá are spectacular—absolutely not to be missed if you are the least bit tantalized by the mysteries of the Mayan world. However, during the tourist season, some of the magic is lost if you are viewing these ruins along with hordes of other tourists, so an excellent plan is to stay at the Hacienda Chichén, right on the grounds of the site, where you can stroll through the jungle in the early morning to savor the romantic beauty of the remains of this ancient Mayan city in relative solitude. The Hacienda Chichén is an excellent choice for accommodations, especially if you want to feel part of the history of the exploration of these ruins, because it was in this very hacienda that the archaeologists stayed when doing their original research. This nostalgic, very authentic, old hacienda and the charming gardens remain much as they must have been in their prime. You can sip a gin and tonic or have a cup of tea on the veranda after a day of exploration and just feel the excitement the explorers must have felt so long ago. The guestrooms, tucked about the property in houses built of concrete blocks, are really nice—not fancy at all, just very comfortable and tastefully decorated. My favorite was the cottage named for Dr. Thomason, who was in charge of the original dig.
