Karen's Review Of This Property:
If you are looking for luxurious accommodations without sacrificing one iota of charm, the Camino Real is an incomparable choice. Not only is this spectacular hotel a real beauty, but it also boasts the finest location in town—between two of Oaxaca’s prime targets: the zócalo (main square) with its gorgeous cathedral and the lovely Santo Domingo. This former convent of Santa Catalina dates back to the 16th century, when it was constructed for the Dominican nuns. Happily, nothing has been over renovated: the building has been tenderly restored, preserving its stunning architectural features and authentic grace while subtly adding deluxe amenities. Time slips by as you step into the first romantic garden courtyard, bound by massive arched colonnades. Quiet tiled corridors enhanced by faded original frescoes lead to two additional sun-drenched courtyards: one features a pretty stone fountain where the nuns used to do their washing, while the other has a lovely swimming pool. The guestrooms vary in style and size due to the age of the building, but all are most appealing and decorated with great taste using native weavings, hand-loomed fabrics, and colorful Mexican tiles in the bathrooms. As would be expected in a luxury hotel, all rooms are air-conditioned and offer all modern amenities. The hotel also offers live entertainment on the weekends.
