Hotel de Cortés Sketch

Karen's Review Of This Property:

If you want to sample of bit of Mexico’s rich historic past, the Hotel de Cortés is your best bet. In fact, it is the only choice for accommodations in a building that dates back to the 17th century. Now part of the World Hotels chain, this hotel is well located just across from the Alameda Park and only steps from the Palace of Fine Arts, the hotel is a richly adorned, baroque stone building constructed in the early part of the 17th century as a hospice for the Order of the Augustinians. From the beginning, the monastery welcomed weary friars who used this as a resting place on their journeys. Over the handsome stone entry is a charming carving of Santo Tomás de Villanueva, patron of the needy, shown bestowing his gentle blessing on all who enter. Inside, the most inviting feature of the Hotel de Cortés becomes immediately evident: the building is constructed around an exceptionally cheerful interior courtyard adorned by a central fountain, flowers, trees, and potted plants. There is an indoor restaurant but on sunny days the sheltered patio is the heart of the hotel where guests dine at colorfully set tables. Most of the bedrooms overlook the courtyard and are appropriately simple in their decor. This is not a deluxe hotel: the guestrooms are plain but very pleasant and the bathrooms are a bit dated—but spotlessly clean.
