Karen's Review Of This Property:
High on the hill above the city reached by the narrowest of winding streets an 18th-century mansion, embraced by the gardens and stone walls of the Castelo Sao Jorge, has been remodeled into the loveliest of hotels. This building was constructed on the site of the former Alcáçova Palace kitchens, which is why it is still known as the "Palacete das Cozinhas” (Kitchen Mansion). The large living-cum-breakfast room has a wall of windows showcasing the inviting central courtyard—the perfect spot to enjoy breakfast and relax at the end of the day. Of the fourteen guestrooms, eight are found in the old section and six in a purpose-built wing, which you reach along a windowed passageway over the entry. In the new part, four rooms enjoy balconies and overlook the courtyard. Air conditioning was installed at great expense, as it had to respectfully navigate the uncovered archaeological foundations. Old tiles and stones were carefully removed, restored, and replaced for the traditional finishing touches. Classified as an historic building, the mansion has been beautifully restored and brought back to life by high-quality contemporary design and comforts. Catch the tram into town for sightseeing.
