Karen's Review Of This Property:
Wandering off the main tourist trail in Sicily is recommended for the traveler who truly enjoys contact with local people and their culture (best to have some command of Italian) and is curious and open to new experiences, without being tied to rigid schedules. If you leave yourselves in the hands of the Contes, you will certainly be rewarded with a once-in-a-lifetime stay. Reaching Gangi is an adventure in itself, taking you far away from the main route through the scenic Madonie Mountains, which cut across the mid-northern part of Sicily. Villa Raino is just outside Gangi, with its tightly packed houses covering the tip of a mountaintop. Host, Aldo, left the family hotel business in town and restored this 100-year-old brick house once owned by a noble family, offering an excellent countryside restaurant for local families and city people coming from as far away as Palermo. On the first and second floors there are ten unique guestrooms with mansard ceilings, some having a small balcony. A mix of family antiques is scattered about the rooms, which have Tiffany bedside lamps and walls stenciled using an ancient technique that gives the effect of floral wallpaper. Bathrooms have brightly colored tiles. All in all Villa Raino provides a delightful opportunity to explore this off-track area.
