Karen's Review Of This Property:
Mantova is a delightful discovery on the trail of lesser-known art cities of Italy, exceptional for its position on four miniature lakes, which are found right in the historic center. On the outskirts of the city is the San Girolamo property of the Mantovani family where guestrooms are also situated in a part of the former convent and watermill dating to the 17th century, complete with the sound of waterfalls. Four very simply appointed bedrooms are found above the breakfast room (two with en suite bathrooms and two sharing a bathroom) where Kim your host greets you in the morning with fresh cakes and coffee and makes suggestions on the many itineraries in the area. After years of world travel, he has come back to assist in the management of the family agricultural and hospitality business. Ten new guestrooms have been added on one level with individual entrances in the converted barn just across from the family’s home. The almost 200 acres of cultivated land are divided up in various surrounding areas. An interesting bike or boat excursion starts from San Girolamo and follows the Mincio Park Preserve and river all the way to Lake Garda (20 kilometers). Bikes can also be used to ride into Mantova as the locals do, an excellent way to view the ancient monuments and squares.
