Le Magnolie Sketch

Karen's Review Of This Property:

Mario and Gabriella Tortella left an intense corporate life and returned to their peaceful Abruzzo region with the intention of concentrating on organic farming and hospitality. They have succeeded and today the 90-acre property overlooking the Apennines is made up of olive groves, woods, a kiwi plantation, orchards, pastures for farm animals, and fields of grain and cereals. Guests are welcomed like old friends and are accommodated within the six country-style bedrooms upstairs in the main 300-year-old house or in one of the more independent apartments next door. Very much in keeping with the simple rustic features of the farmhouse, they have wrought-iron beds, antique armoires, new tiled bathrooms, and a common living room. The largest has a fireplace and kitchenette. Guests convene in the evening for conversation and an excellent regional meal prepared with ingredients straight from the farm by Gabriella’s mother, Olga, either out on the covered porch or in one of the vaulted brick dining rooms. This is a very pleasant base for exploring Loreto, Penne, Pescara, Atri, and three national parks, among other attractions. Alternatively, you can relax poolside and just enjoy the views, the tranquility, and superb meals.

We booked our apartment sometime in Oct./Nov. 2006. The apartment which we requested was unavailable at the time so Carla, the reservation manager booked us at the same rate in a similar apartment Podere (2 beds, 2 baths). When inquiring why this apartment was not on the web site, we were told "it was too new". Anyways, upon arrival we were greeted and shown to our apartment by Mario. Our apartment did have two bedrooms and two baths, but was not "too new". One bath had been redone, but not the other. Before Mario left, so we could use the shower, we had him fix the shower head faucet which was falling out of the wall. Never mind the tub/shower model. We were concern that the towel bars and medicine cabinet about ready to fall, did not during our stay. Additionally, the shower curtain had either mold growing or some type of nest in the upper corner. The kitchen did not meet our expectations. It was worn and some cookware was unusable. Also, there was at times when our apartment got what we thought was a septic system odor. They did fix the porch awning during our stay. When visiting the "identical" apartment downstairs, we don't think the upstairs apartment is of comparable value. Really, there is no comparison in the quality and our rental price should have been lower. During our stay, Olga, Olga's husband (who fixed our awning) and Milva were very warm and welcoming (my husband speaks Italian allowing conversation). However, with the exception of check-in, Mario, Gabriella and Carla did not stop in to inquire about our stay. The meals were very good, the grounds quite nice, and I imagine most other apartments were in better condition than ours. I'm torn, since Olga, her husband, Milva and the other guest staying all seemed great: however, I don'T know if I could recommend Le Magnolie. Having stayed in many agritourismos there are better values and higher service in this part of Italy.

PROPERTY RESPONSE:

We are very upset for what they reported and we want to take our responsibility for those things which are true. First of all when they first inquired us for availability, Carla told them that only Podere was available at the same price as the other big apartments. Until 2 years ago Mario and his family used to live in Podere. Afterwards they move into another house and since then Podere was used as another apartment for guests. Some works have been done. Anyway the apartment is part of a seventeenth century building so we could not do many changes. For example it is true that one bathroom is newer than the other and the reason being it was not there and we built it brand new. When Carla told them that Podere was a new apartment she did not mean to underline that it was new (she didn't say "too new", indeed) but she only wanted to justify why Podere was not on the website. In fact guests can be worried if they book an apartment which is not on the website.... It is true that the shower needed to be fixed up and I did fix it. And Vincenzo fixed the porch awning. We cannot understand what kind of odor they smelled, we really don't know but I am sure that if they had said that to us we would have solved the problem! Concerning the kitchen, it is a normal kitchen which has been obviously used but which works perfectly. Also the other kitchens have been used! We would like to know which cookware was unusable...we have good stainless steel pots. We know that Podere has not the same elegance as the other apartments, but it is comfortable and clean, and it gets the same services as the others get. For sure it is not true that we were not kind with them. I asked them how was their stay while they were having dinner and Carla did when they went to settle the bill (as usual!) They also had cooking lessons and looked very happy and interested with them. They were always smiling (except one of the 2 ladies, Mrs D.-NOTE THE READER ASKED TO REMAIN ANNONYMOUS). Gabriella in that week was very busy with her job and she was rarely in the farmhouse. We are really sad for this negative feedback, especially when you think that everything is going well but then it is not like this in actual fact. We will take note of this feedback and try to improve. We also hope that you will receive some positive feedback and if so, please, let us know. Thank you very much for letting us know about that. Kind regards, Mario Tortella and the staff.
