Karen's Review Of This Property:
L’Aubèle is a lovely Bearnese-style home in a small village that looks across fields to the Pyrénées. The stone and plaster home is attractive with its shuttered windows and third-floor dormers peeking through the slate roof. Typical of the houses in this region, the courtyard is central to the home and barn and is enclosed behind a front wall. Although L’Aubèle had been abandoned for 25 years, it was tightly boarded up, so while the Desbonnets had to add modern conveniences such as plumbing, the interior cabinetry, the staircase, and the old windows were all in great condition. A seating arrangement in front of the large, open fireplace is a wonderful place to settle and an intimate dining area overlooks the park. Upstairs, you find the guestrooms and a cozy sitting area with bookshelves packed with novels and information on the region. La Rose, named for its color scheme, is a pretty room with a double bed and en suite bathroom, while the second, very handsome bedroom has an old sleigh bed and an enormous bathroom. With just two bedrooms this is perfect for family or friends traveling together.
