Karen's Review Of This Property:

La Baule, a small town on the southern coast of Brittany, is popular for its wide stretch of sandy beach and for its chic casino. Most hotels in La Baule have been built in recent years to accommodate the many people who come here for their summer holidays. Happily, for those who prefer the nostalgic charm of yesteryear, the Castel Marie Louise not only has a prime position across from the beach, but also exudes charm and grandeur. As you look at the immense stone house with its steeply pitched roof and fantasy of perky gables and turreted towers, you assume it must have been built as a fancy hotel but, in fact—hard as it is to believe—this masterpiece was originally built as a private home. The hotel sits majestically in expansive, parklike grounds, with a velvety lawn sweeping down to the road and beyond to the promenade by the sea. Inside there is a formal, old-world ambiance. Guestrooms are all tastefully decorated and some have views out over the gardens to the water. The food, featuring regional specialties, is excellent and is served in a cheerful, sunny dining room with large windows, though in balmy weather many guests choose to eat outside overlooking the manicured English garden. For those who like to gamble, the casino is just a short walk down the road.
