Set in the rolling foothills of the Pyrénées, in a picture-book village near the Spanish border, the Hôtel Arraya captures the tradition and rustic flavor of this Basque region. Long ago the hotel was founded to provide lodgings for pilgrims on the road to Santiago de Compostela. Today it accommodates guests who have fallen in love with this dear inn and return time and again. The Hôtel Arraya is decorated with an abundance of 17th-century Basque antiques and is a comfortable and hospitable village hotel. The entry, lobby, and breakfast nook are charming: cozy blue-and-white gingham cushions pad the wooden chairs, which are set around a lovely collection of antique tables. The restaurant offers regional Basque specialties to tempt you: ravioles de xangurro, agneau aux pochas, foie de canard frais, poêlé aux cèpes, fromages des Montagnes and pastiza, a delicious Basque almond cake filled with cream or black cherry preserve. The bedrooms are all individual in decor and size, and are attractive with their whitewashed walls, exposed beams, and pretty fabrics. The hotel has been in the Fagoagas’ family for many generations and guests are welcomed as friends in the traditional way, round the zizailua (bench) near the fire.
